Itinerary
Day 1: Muscat, Barka Fish Market, Al Hazm Fort, Rustaq Fort, Sohar
Depart from Muscat and head to Barka, where you’ll visit the local fish market. Watch as fishermen bring in their daily catch, including tuna, kingfish and prawns, and sell it in a lively, authentic setting.
Continue to Al Hazm Fort, one of the most distinctive forts in Oman. Built in the early 18th century, it features a unique architectural design. There are no wooden ceiling beams. The roofs are supported by stone columns, a rare feature in Omani heritage buildings.
Next, visit Rustaq Fort, one of the oldest and largest forts in the country, with origins dating back over 4,000 years, long before the arrival of Islam. It is perched on a rocky outcrop and offers panoramic views of the surrounding oasis.
Arrive in Sohar, an ancient port city with deep historical roots. Check in to your hotel and relax. Overnight in Sohar.
Day 2: Sohar, Ibri, Bat, Al Ayn, Jabal Shams
After breakfast, depart for Ibri, crossing arid plains and traditional landscapes.
Arrive at Bat, Al Ayn and Al-Khutm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves some of the oldest man-made structures on the Arabian Peninsula. Here, you’ll find beehive tombs dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. These are circular dry-stone burial structures built over 5,000 years ago.
From here, begin an off-road drive into the western Hajar Mountains, heading towards Jabal Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun” and the highest peak in Oman. Arrive in the late afternoon. Check in to your hotel. Overnight in Jabal Shams.
Day 3: Jabal Shams, Al Hamra, Bahla Fort, Nizwa, Muscat
After breakfast, stop in Al Hamra, a traditional village known for its well-preserved mud-brick houses and quiet charm.
Make a photo stop at Bahla Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage site. It is surrounded by 12 km of ancient mud walls and stands as a powerful symbol of Omani architectural and historical legacy.
Continue to Nizwa, the cultural heart of Oman. Visit Nizwa Fort, with its massive cylindrical tower, then explore the lively souq, renowned for handmade silver jewellery, khanjars and traditional crafts. In the afternoon, return to Muscat.
