Mountains, Villages & Forts: A 3-Day Journey Through Northern Oman


Experience the diverse landscapes and cultural heritage of northern Oman on a 3-day journey through the Hajar Mountains, traditional villages and historic towns.

Begin in Barka, where the local fish market offers a glimpse into everyday coastal life, before heading into the mountains for a spectacular 4x4 crossing of Wadi Bani Awf, surrounded by rugged scenery and small traditional villages.


Continue to Al Hamra, where the restored Bait Al Safah offers an insight into traditional Omani life, then explore Misfat Al Abriyeen, known for its terraces, old houses and mountain setting. The journey reaches Jabal Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun”, with spectacular views over Oman's famous Grand Canyon.


The final day focuses on Oman's architectural heritage, with visits to Nizwa Fort and Souq, a photo stop at Bahla Fort, and the beautifully decorated Jabrin Castle, before returning to Muscat.

DAY 1 · MUSCAT → BARKA → WADI BANI AWF → NIZWA

Depart from Muscat and travel towards Barka, where you will visit the local fish market and observe fishermen bringing in and selling their daily catch, including tuna, prawns, kingfish and other varieties.

Continue into the Hajar Mountains for a spectacular 4x4 crossing of Wadi Bani Awf, following a rugged mountain route surrounded by dramatic scenery and small traditional villages.

Continue towards Nizwa.

Overnight: Nizwa


DAY 2 · NIZWA → AL HAMRA → MISFAT AL ABRIYEEN → JABAL SHAMS → NIZWA

After breakfast, depart for Jabal Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun”.

First stop in Al Hamra, a historic town known for its traditional mud-brick houses. Visit Bait Al Safah, a restored traditional house offering an insight into how Omani families lived in the past.

Continue to Misfat Al Abriyeen for a photo stop and enjoy views of its terraced agricultural landscapes, narrow lanes and old houses built into the mountainside.

Continue by 4x4 towards Jabal Shams and admire the spectacular views over the Grand Canyon of Oman.

Return to Nizwa.

Overnight: Nizwa


DAY 3 · NIZWA → BAHLA → JABRIN → MUSCAT

After breakfast, visit Nizwa Fort, dominated by its massive circular watchtower, followed by Nizwa Souq, renowned for its traditional crafts and handmade silver jewellery.

Continue to Bahla for a photo stop at the impressive Bahla Fort.

Proceed to Jabrin Castle, one of Oman's finest historic buildings, known for its beautifully decorated interiors and traditional architectural details.

Continue to Muscat, concluding the journey.
