RUB AL KHALI DESERT TOUR
(FULL DAY)
Tour description
Once in Dhofar, a visit to Al Rub Al Khali (The Empty Quarter), the most remarkable and popular site in Dhofar with its pristine and magical sand dunes, is a must. Depart in the morning by 4WD to the Qara Mountain range, with spectacular views of the Salalah plains, dotted with dense bush and forest.
After a short break in the town of Thumrait, an ancient Bedouin settlement, we head west on a rough road through the immense gravel desert of ‘Al Nejd’ to the ‘Lost City of Ubar’ (UNESCO World Heritage Site). This ancient legendary kingdom is said to have existed in one of the most inhospitable places on earth: the vast and forbidding Rub Al Khali desert. According to myth, the desert swallowed Ubar, leaving no trace, becoming the fabled ‘Atlantis of the sands’. From the site, drive to the Empty Quarter to experience the ‘world’s largest sand desert’ by walking on fascinating sand dunes. A breathtaking view of the vast desert awaits you at the top of the dunes.
On the way back to Salalah, you enter the Wadi ‘Dawkah’ (UNESCO World Heritage Site), known as the ‘Wadi of Incense’, also known as the largest collection of naturally grown incense trees in the region. Learn about incense and its use in the past and in the modern world.
