EAST – WEST SALALAH TOUR (FULL DAY)

EAST – WEST SALALAH TOUR

(FULL DAY)

Tour description

The tour begins by visiting the ancient fishing village of ‘Taqah’, famous for the production of ‘dried sardines’, the traditional and ancient ‘Dhofari houses’, followed by the ‘Taqah Castle’, once the official residence of the ‘Wali’ (governor) of the region and an insight into the rich history of the region. Head on to the ancient ruins of the City of Sumharam (Khor Rohr). It was the most eastern outpost of the Hadramawt Kingdom along the ancient incense route between the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf and India. It is believed to have been the hub and port for the shipment of incense (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

A picturesque route takes you to ‘Mirbat ‘, the ancient capital of Dhofar and the beginning of the ‘frankincense trail’. Stroll through streets lined with old Omani houses and visit the two-domed ‘Tomb of Bin Ali’ as a photo stop (External Visit) … a classic example of medieval architecture. On the way back, explore the ‘Ayn Razat’. Freshwater springs surrounded by fenced rose gardens, with several pools and caves nearby.

Next stop is Mughsail Beach, where the white sand hugs the deep blue ocean and, at high tide, waves crash through the titanic natural ‘Blow Holes’ at the end of ‘Rocky Beach’ with a cave-like entrance.

We then drive along the winding road towards the historic ‘Frankincense Trees‘ that grow in their natural habitat, deep in the valleys, dotting the dry, craggy countryside. A short walk to scent the ‘sacred frankincense’ in the valleys amidst the views of the region.

Back to the hotel.
